Miles and Miles
03:56
|
|
||
I was driving alone one early morning
nothing for miles and miles around
My hand was searching for a station, my eyes; the road ahead.
Find only static but I like the sound
Where are you going
does it really matter where I'm going,
It's never mattered much to me
If you don't mind the winding roads I'm taking,
I sure could use the company
I saw you standing by the median
with your thumb held in the air
My mother always said "don't pick up strangers, who knows where they have been"
So I had to laugh as I let you in.
So we laughed above the engine
talked the weather for a while
growing closer as we raced across the border, arm in arm
speeding on for miles and miles

Echoes
03:56
|
|
||
Small town staring through my window
I'm a passing train's lazy whistle blowing
I'd be happy in the city, I suppose
Where neon bleed the night
You're the silence found on Sunday
The languid cadence of an afternoon
Humming low, like the air within a dream
I can feel you in my bones
Spring has come and gone and
all the faded lines lead my eyes
to wander solitary streets
The Highway hums beneath
Echoes off the nameless stars in space
The smell of spring is a siren's song
I am captured by its lullaby
Drifting further from the shores my fathers knew
Just to wake beneath a foreign sky

The Island
05:15
|
|
||
In my mind, I live in a city by the sea.
Water all around me, An island home to call my own.
One day you came from the sky, in sailing ships on high, with desire in your eyes
you're calling from the mainsail, laying claim to all that lay below.
I was not prepared
to find you at the gates
demanding that I let you in
but I said no no no, this is my home and it's not for anyone to own
I held out, employed my best defenses,
though you overwhelm the senses
oh god, I am helpless
I was not prepared
to find you at the gates
demanding that I let you in
In my mind, I lay my arms down
you're clawing at the ramparts, I raise a rag to signify
that I surrender I surrender I surrender I surrender
In a pause, lay a silence all around
I must admit I was surprised, to find myself inside your eyes
I was not prepared
to find you at the gates
demanding that I let you in

Row by Row
03:34
|
|

V1
on this earth, we toil and tend
hardened ground comes soft again
in row by row by row by row
row by row by row by row
V2
sowing seedlings deep beneath
woken from unending sleep
to grow and grow and grow and grow
in row by row by row by row
V3
in our homes and boroughs lay
earthly limits cast away
in row by row by row by row
we grow and grow and grow and grow
M
on this earth we stretch and yawn
carbon engines driven on
by the light of day
and our singing cells
and the chemicals
inside ourselves
V4
cast these bones to hold this spark
and press against the endless dark
as it grows and grows and grows and grows
and grow and grows and grows and grows

Departing Hymn
04:21
|
|
||
mirror on my wall
whose words I hold dear
glittering through greasy light
a reflection of my cruelest friend
i will be, i will be strong
i will be, i will be faster
i will be, i will be loved
in the next life
in the end there's no sign
flashing lights or trumpet song
just a pause, to rest and reflect
while the waiter gets the check
i will be, i will be brave
i will be, i will be beautiful
i will be graced in all things
in the next life
i'll pack my suitcase full of photographs of everyone I knew
tie my scarf and lace my shoes
the gang is waiting, waving, with a sign, with my name
i'll save my love for you in the next world, for someday
i will be, i will be brave
i will be, i will be beautiful
i will be, i will be loved
in the next life
